Temple Festivals

Vavu Bali

Vavubali is an important occassion which falls on the first New Moon day in the Dakshinayanam. It is the new monn day in the Karkidaka in Malayalam months. Next to the Kasi, Gaya and Haridwar, the Papanasini river at Thirunelli Vishnu Temple (Known as South Gaya), is the most suitable place for us to conduct Bali Tharpanam and Sradham. Sradham in the act of giving food to the departed souls with devotion, dedication and full respect. It is the strong belief of hindus that nothing other than the offerings like Sradha done in this temple due to Lord Brahma has installed the idols in this temple. Knowing this importance, Rishi Jamadagni, Parasurama and Shree Rama were offered Shradhas here. If the Sradha is offering for a particular single soul, it is called Ekodishta Sradham. The birth star of death day of every year is considered for Shraadha. If it is for the departed souls of a family, it is known as Bahuddishta Sradham. The most suitable time to do bahuddishta shraadha is new moon. In this reason the bahuddishta shraadha is also known as Vavubali. The peak time of shraddha is generally the new moon day of Karkkidaka, Thulam, Kumbham and Medam months.

The 14 days from the 1st day after the Full Moon is the period of Karutha Paksham. Velutha Paksham is the Night for 'Pithrukkal' (departed souls), and Karutha Paksham refers to the day time for them. "Amavasi" refers to the noon time for the departed souls. The new moon of Karkidaka is the noon point of day for both Devas and the Pithrus. Hence this occassion is blessed with the presence of all Devas. Both of them take part in receiving pooja and taking food served. This new moon day in Karkidaka is the only occassion when we get both of them together to serve food and receive blessings in return. Moksha (salvation) can be quickly attained through Lord Vishnu and here at Papanasini River. We conduct Pithru Tharpana ceremonies and Shraadham for the Moksha of all the departed souls of our family. This will bring prosperity, welfare, long life, health and wealth in our life through the satisfied Pithrus and Devas.
